Until 1909, the traction system used was animal-powered, and that year the trams were electrified once a company was formed, with the participation of Belgian capital, which contributed with the financing and the necessary technical capacity for the transformation of the network.
After the Spanish Civil War, during the period of autarchy, there were the highest traffic volumes over some exploitation elements of impossible renovation, due to the lack of replacement in the national and international markets, the latter was closed because of the international isolation after the Second World War.
The expiration of licenses, the deterioration of the scarcely renewed elements of the network and the desire of the Gijon City Council to replace the trams for a municipal bus service were the reasons for the disappearance of the trams in Gijón, which ran for the last time on the 10th of May of 1964.
